How to Comment on Blogs

Hello students and welcome to our blog!

A blog is a place where the author writes posts - like the one you are reading - and visitors leave comments. We will use this blog - http://practicalwriting.blogspot.com (remember not to include www.) - to exchange ideas about writing and to do some tasks to better prepare you for your writing activities.

In order to comment, all you have to do is click the "# comments" link right after the post:

In the next window, you type your comment in the text window, proofread your message, sign your message and hit the "publish your comment button". Hi dear Practical Writers, I am very happy to have received a comment from a student and I have added more information to the previous introduction.  Please feel free to comment and make suggestions!!

Hello,
My name is Simone Salles and I will be your instructor for the Practical Writing online course.   I have been an English teacher for about 15 years, and I love what I do.  I have majored in English (Letras) and have always taught at private courses, In fact, teaching at language schools is more fulfilling to me.  I have been a teacher at CTJ for a total of 12 years; therefore, I have witnessed many changes along these years, and online courses are part of those changes.  I am really looking forward to working with this group. I hope we have a great opportunity to share and improve our writing skills.

Simone

About the Instructor- final version

Hi dear practical writers! I suppose this is a busy week for you all and since nobody else has given me new feedback, I decided to post my final version based on your previous suggestions and questions. Notice that the difference between this final version and the 2nd version is the fact that I used connectors to link the ideas of my paragraph. The ideas flow much better! This is something you have to consider when writing your own paragraphs!

I'm Vinicius Lemos and I work at Casa Thomas Jefferson. I have been an English teacher for 16 years, 10 of which at Casa Thomas Jefferson. By the way, I work at the Sudoeste Branch and I teach children, teenagers and adults as well. This is the 4th online course I teach and I like trying out innovative teaching and learning practices. I learned English the English I know at Casa Thomas Jefferson. In fact, I started when I was only 11 years old. In addition, I lived in North Dakota as an exchange student from 1993 to 1994. I must say it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. This picture was taken last year on trip to New York City, one of my favorite spots on Earth. Moreover, I love cold weather, so no better place to be during my vacation. Traveling, as a matter of fact, is probably my favorite hobby.I have visited some countries in South America, like Argentina,Peru, Chile and Uruguay and this is one of the reasons why I am studying Spanish. I want to travel and practice Spanish on future adventures. How about you, do you like visiting different places like I do?

Now, it`s time for me to know a bit more about you all! I`m very curious to learn more things about everyone! Use my paragraph as a model and upload your own to our course platform. Have a great week!

About the Instructor- 2nd version

Hi guys, based on all your questions and suggestions I have improved a bit my paragraph. That`s how it looks now:

I'm Vinicius Lemos.I work at Casa Thomas Jefferson. I have been an English teacher for 16 years or so.I have worked at Thomas for almost 10 years. I work at the Sudoeste Branch.I teach children, teenagers and adults. I learned English at Casa Thomas Jefferson. I started when I was only 11 years old. I lived in North Dakota. I was an exchange student. The year was 1993.This picture was taken last year.I was in New York City. I love cold weather. I have visited some countries in South America. I have visited Argentina,Peru, Chile and Uruguay. I am studying Spanish. I want to travel and practice Spanish. This is the 4th online course I teach. I like trying out innovative teaching and learning practices.

So , what do you think about it? Is it good enough? Is there anything you think I should do to make it look better? Should I include any other piece of information?
Give me some more ideas so that I can write my final version for this paragraph. Tomorrow night I am going to take your comments and post the final third version. See you guys!

About the Instructor- 3rd Final Version

Hello everyone, there are a few things I`d like to share with you about myself.I'm Vinicius Lemos and I was born in Brasília in 1976. I`m single and I have two brothers and a sister, all younger than me. I`ve lived here all my life. As a matter of fact, everyone in my family lives in Brasília, except for my mother, who lives in Florianópolis. I have been an English teacher for sixteen years, nine of which at Casa Thomas Jefferson. Nowadays, I`m working at the Sudoeste branch and I really like my job because I always have the opportunity to meet new people and share with them so many interesting things about the English language and other things about life in general. As a teacher, I have a very busy life, but there are many things I like to do in my spare time. On weekends, for example, I go running at the park and, after that, I visit my grandmother or my father. We have lunch together and it`s the opportunity I have to meet some relatives and talk to them for a little bit. Whenever I have some free time, I like to dance hip hop, which is definitely my favorite hobby. I also like studying languages. Indeed, I study Italian and Spanish and I must say it`s been a wild experience, but I`m enjoying it very much. Last year I had one one my dreams come true: I traveled to France. To be honest, I love visiting different countries and learning about other cultures. This picture was taken at the Versailles Palace, in France. It was my favorite place there! In sum, I think I`m a very happy person because I`m able to work with something I really like and I also have time to do so many things I enjoy.

So here is the final version! What do you think about it? Is it more organized now? Does the reading flow better? What makes this a better paragraph if compared to the previous ones?

I'm Vinicius Lemos. I was born in Brasília in 1976. Last year I traveled to France. I love visiting different countries and learning about other cultures. You've said I included few ideas, so now I have added a lot more information. Is that enough? Take a look at what other classmates have said about the first version and look at this second version again. What else could be done to improve this piece of writing?
Can you give me more specific suggestions this time? You have the power to edit my sentences and ideas! Make your comment and say how you would improve it(post the edited and corrected sentence). You don't need to correct everything but rather a piece of it. This way, everyone will have a chance to contribute!

On Sunday evening, I'll write a third final version based on all your suggestions given this weekend. I'm looking foward to hearing from you!

About your instructor (2)

I'm Claudio Fleury. I come from Goiania, I moved to Brasilia in 1994 to study Architecture at Unb, and have lived here ever since. I graduated in 2000 and decided to continue living here, even though I frequently travel to visit my family in my hometown. I have been teaching English as a foreign language for the past 15 years or so, and I've been working at Casa Thomas Jefferson since 2004. I now work at the main branch, Asa Sul, after five years at the Lago Sul branch.

I really love teaching, and have been teaching and tutoring online courses since 2008. One of my interests is the use of technology for teaching and learning a foreign language. I am also part of the Education Technology team at CTJ.

In my free time I enjoy reading books and listening to audiobooks. I've discovered how practical audiobooks are and now just can't live without them. On weekends I watch sitcoms and old TV series, like Get Smart or The Adams Family. It may surprise you, but I like to relax doing crosswords, in Portuguese I must say.

What about a third draft?

After the last post, I decided to follow the suggestions and reduced my introduction. Here's the result.

My name is Claudio Fleury Curado Sasse, which I find a very long name. Some people call me Claudio, others Fleury, others Sasse. I am 36 years old and I was born in Goiânia. I have been living in Brasilia for 16 years, I am not married and don’t have any kids. My family still lives in Goiânia and I visit them often.

I love living in Brasilia. I moved here in 1994, to study at Universidade de Brasilia. I had already taken three years of Civil Engineering when I decided I wanted to be an Architect. I graduated in 2000, and worked as an architect until 2005. Nowadays I only get involved with architecture in very special occasions, for my family or friends, for example.

When I was 11, in the 5th grade, I had English and French classes. I loved French, but I hated English and simply could not understand it. I almost flunked 5th grade because of English, so I started an English course to help me in school. That was when I discovered English and how easy it was. I learned that it was useful, and knowing English was something extraordinary for me. With English I could read American magazines, not to mention the songs, which I could understand.

Today I am really glad I almost flunked English, because it was a turning point in my life. The first time I taught English was in 1991. While I was taking Civil Engineering I took a course for English teachers, and had some more classroom experience. Shortly after that I moved to Brasilia.

In Brasilia, while I was in college, I worked as a trainee architect and an English teacher. In 2005, however, when I started working at Casa Thomas Jefferson, I realized that I really wanted to be an English teacher. I took the Teacher Development Course, and I soon got involved with technology in education. I have never studied or lived abroad, and I like to tell it to my students. You don’t actually need to spend time abroad to learn English, but it definitely helps.

English teachers don’t have much free time. Whenever I have some extra time, I read books and comics, I surf the net and watch movies. If I really want to relax, I do some crosswords, and I especially like the difficult ones. I love listening to jazz, classical music and some pop. It helps me concentrate when I am preparing classes or studying.

Well, it’s time I finished this. I did not intend to make this a long introduction, but I really wanted it to show you a bit about who I am and how I got here. Thanks to your questions, I had a lot to write about.

A more complete introduction

My name is Claudio Fleury Curado Sasse, which I find a very long name. Some people call me Claudio, others Fleury, others call me Sasse. My family calls me Claudinho, because I am named after my father, but since I have my mother’s surnames, I am not called Junior. I am 36 years old and I was born in Goiânia. I have been living in Brasilia for 16 years, I am not married and don’t have any kids. My family still lives in Goiânia and I visit them often, although I really feel lazy to drive all the way there sometimes. I mean, I love going there, but the trip bores me. I have two sisters, who are married, and one brother. I also have three nephews. The youngest is only three months old, and he is now a wonderful reason for me to make frequent trips to visit my family.

I love living in Brasilia. I moved here in 1994, to study at Universidade de Brasilia. Before coming here, I studied at Universidade Federal de Goiás. I had already taken three years of Civil Engineering when I decided I wanted to be an Architect. That is why I came to Brasilia. I graduated in 2000, and also worked as an architect until 2005. Nowadays I only get involved with architecture in very special occasions, for my family or friends, for example.

How I learned English is an interesting story. When I was 11, in the 5th grade, I had English and French classes at Lyceu de Goiânia, where I studied. I loved French, and I really was the best student in class. However, I hated English, and simply could not understand it. I almost flunked 5th grade because of English, so I started an English course to help me in school. That was when I discovered English and how easy it was. I learned that it was useful, and back in the 1980s, when there was no internet or much technology available, knowing English was something extraordinary for me. I had always liked to read comic books, and with English I could read American comics without having to wait for them to be published in Portuguese, not to mention the songs I could now understand.

I think if it hadn’t been for the comics I loved, I would not have developed my English skills so much. After some time I was proud to say I could go to the movies and not read the subtitles anymore. Today I am really glad I almost flunked English, because it was a turning point in my life. I simply cannot imagine my life without this language. The first time I taught English was in 1991. I was 17 and it was a very short experience. I come from a family of teachers – geography, history, social studies – and teaching is in my blood. While I was taking Civil Engineering I took a course for English teachers, and had some more classroom experience. Shortly after that I moved to Brasilia.

Already in Brasilia I started teaching English in a language school. While I was in college, I worked as a trainee architect and an English teacher. It was only in 2005, however, when I started working at Casa Thomas Jefferson, that I realized that what I wanted was to be an English teacher. I took the Teacher Development Course, and I soon got involved with technology in education. Technology has always been part of my life too. I got my first computer, handed down from a cousin of mine, when I was 13, and I have been using computers ever since.

I have never studied or lived abroad, and this is something I like to tell my students. You don’t actually need to spend time abroad to learn English, but it definitely helps. This month I am going to take part in a conference for English teachers in Boston. I am really looking forward to it, because I am going to have a presentation about Cyber Project, a course for teenagers, here at the Casa, that develops digital literacy and, of course, English skills.

English teachers don’t have much free time. Whenever I have some extra time, I read books and comics, I surf the net and watch movies; however, I rarely go to the movies, because I feel sleepy. If I really want to relax, I do some crosswords, and I especially like the difficult ones. I love listening to jazz, classical music and some pop. It helps me concentrate when I am preparing classes.

Well, it’s time I finished this. I did not intend to make this a long introduction, but I really wanted it to show you a bit about who I am and how I got here. Thanks to your questions, I had a lot to write about.

My new introduction

Dear students, thank you very much for the great comments and questions. I tried to included all the information that you asked, but if there is more you would like to know, ask in the comment area.
Also, let me know if this time it is more complete. Here it goes:

My name is Ronaldo Mangueira Lima Júnior and most people call me Ronaldo. Actually, only my family and friends who know me since I was a kid call me Júnior - probably because they call my father Ronaldo. I was born in Brasília and have been living here for all my life, 26 years, and really don't like it when people say there is nothing to do in Brasília. Even though most people say I'm too young to be married, I'm glad to say that I found my soul mate almost 9 years ago and we have been married (but with no children yet) for 3 years and 9 months now.

I have never lived abroad and I am very proud to say that all English I know was learned in Brasília, actually at Casa Thomas Jefferson, where I have been teaching for the past 8 years. Before teaching here, I also taught for 2 years in two other English schools in Brasília (yes, I started working very early!). Even though I have always liked technology (like most boys), I got more involved with technology in language teaching 5 years ago, when I took my first online course about this.

I graduated from high school in Military School and then I entered UnB to study TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I finished my master's in Applied Linguistics at UnB last year and am now taking a PhD in Linguistics also at UnB. Both my master's and my doctorate research is about pronunciation, another passion of mine in my profession.

I kind of started teaching by accident. When I was in high school I wanted to be a professional musician, but my parents kept telling how difficult the life of a musician is (as if teachers got a lot of money...lol), and so I had a plan: I decided to start teaching English to get some pocket money until my music could support me, but then guess what? I fell in love with the language classroom and never wanted to leave it! Now, besides teaching, I'm also aiming at becoming a Second Language Acquisition researcher, writer and presenter (pretty ambitious, huh?)

In my free time I'm usually involved with music, sport and now photography (I've just finished a course!). I started studying music when I was 9 years old and I can play the saxophone, the guitar and a little bit of the drums. Also, I have conducted a youth choir at my church for many years (about 6, I guess). Listening, I enjoy most styles, but I would say my favorites are jazz, soul and Christian. About sports, I used to play volleyball for Military School's team in high school, but two years ago I got crazy about cycling, and now, whenever I can, I go cycling. I'm also getting more and more involved with photography now and you can see my beginning work on my flickr.

Of course, like most people, I also like traveling, and the picture I posted in my first introduction was taken during a trip to New York City, which was in April of last year. I went there to attend and present at an international convention for English teachers, but I certainly found some time to get to know the city; after all, who can resist the temptations of the city that never sleeps? My favorite places there were Times Square, Battery Park and the Brooklyn Bridge. I have never lived abroad, but I beliee this could be a great experience not only for the language but especially for the cultural experience. My trips abroad have only been to Miami, Orlando, New York and Buenos Aires and my favorite one was definitely New York!

As I already mentioned, I love technology. I would say my favorite gadget at this moment is my ipod. Since I am a musician, you can imagine how much fun I have been having with this toy. I also truly believe in the power of e-learning, but I don't think the internet or e-learning will be able to completely replace face-to-face teaching or flesh and bone teachers. I think e-learning is supposed to complement, to be a plus, just like you guys are doing: complementing your knowledge of English with this writing program. Imagine a kid studying everything only through computers, without interacting with other kids? (S)He wouldn't learn the social and moral aspects of life as well as being in contact with other people.

Well, that's it for now. I'm sure we'll learn more from each other little by little. Here is another picture of myself:

So, was this introduction better than the first one?

My new Introduction

Dear students, thank you very much for the great comments and questions. There weren't so many questions, so I have included more information than you asked, just in case you get a little curious... Let me know if this time it is more complete, and ask me questions if you want to know anything else. Here it goes:
